2007: Funding cuts for urban Indian health care put communites at risk
The Urban Indian Health Commission, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., issues a comprehensive analytical report about the poor state of health among urban Indians. The report states that declining federal funding for urban Indian health clinics threatens access to medical care for the majority of American Indians/Alaska Natives who live in cities. And most urban Indians are unable to access care from reservation-based Indian Health Service clinics.
The Urban Indian Health Commission, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, finds that clinical depression, early onset diabetes, and cardiovascular disease are leading health problems for urban Indians.
