Hawai‘i’s sugar industry booms and becomes incredibly profitable after the Kingdom of Hawai‘i enters into a treaty of reciprocity with the United States. The industry’s rapid expansion, however, proves detrimental to Hawai‘i’s land and water resources as they are increasingly devoted to sugar production.
