RxNorm Current Prescribable Content Release Notes

September Release - 09/02/2014

This RxNorm Current Prescribable Content release is consistent with the 2014AA UMLS Metathesaurus release. For additional information about RxNorm releases, including scripts for loading the RxNorm data into Oracle and MySQL databases, read the RxNorm Technical Documentation.

Data Changes

Prescribable Names:
This release includes another batch of prescribable names (TTY=PSN) for many drugs with topical dose forms, including some ointments, gels, and foams.

MTHSPL Active Moieties:
In addition to the data already available in RxNorm for the active and inactive ingredients for all structured product labels (SPLs) on DailyMed, RxNorm now includes the active moieties associated with the active ingredients in the DailyMed SPLs. The active moieties are treated in the same way as the active and inactive ingredients in RXNCONSO.RRF, receiving a term type (TTY) value of 'SU' (substance) and a CODE value of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) unique ingredient identifier (UNII) code found in the SPL.

Along with the active moiety data comes some changes to the relationships between ingredients and drug products in the MTHSPL data. In previous releases, the relationship between active and inactive ingredients and drug products was 'has_ingredient / ingredient_of'. Each of the three types of ingredients will now have unique bidirectional relationships with associated drug products in the RXNREL.RRF file:

RXNORM UNII_CODE Attribute:
RxNorm no longer includes the FDA UNII codes as 'UNII_CODE' attributes associated with SAB=RXNORM ingredients in the RXNSAT.RRF file. With the addition of active moiety UNII codes mentioned above, RxNorm now has a robust set of ingredient UNII codes for all drug products on DailyMed in the RXNCONSO.RRF file. You can find these in the CODE field for SAB=MTHSPL, TTY=SU rows.
