In 1967, the World Health Organization launched a global campaign to eradicate smallpox. With the success of the campaign in 1977, smallpox became the first major disease to be eliminated from the globe.
D. A. Henderson led the World Health Organization’s global campaign to eradicate smallpox. In November 1979 an international commission declared the campaign a success.
