Under his two decades of leadership the Library's mission was broadened as a health information resource, it emerged as a leader in the computer age, and it became a major biomedical communications center, transforming a national resource into a unique international force, one of the most advanced scientific libraries in the world. A program of extramural grants to improve the services and resources of the nation's health science libraries and a Toxicology Information Program were added under his direction and a major achievement was the planning and construction of the Lister Hill Center building which houses the research and development component of the Library.
