Announcement - Reminder of SNOMED International proposal to increase description character limit
SNOMED International, owners of SNOMED CT, propose to increase the maximum length of Fully Specified Name (FSN) and Synonym descriptions from 255 characters to 4096 characters. The requirement for this change has come from the Pharmaceutical / biologic product hierarchy, where the terming guidance for FSNs causes the current limit to be exceeded where there is a large number of ingredients in a medicinal product, which is particularly common in multivalent vaccines.
There is some likelihood that implementers will have hardcoded database schemas to 255 characters, so a significant lead time is proposed before this change would take effect. The current proposal would be for the changes to be implemented in late 2025.
It is important to note that there is absolutely no intention to increase the length of a multitude of the International Descriptions. The proposal is simply to increase the maximum possible size to 4096, in order to allow a small number of necessarily longer terms to be consumed. However, most Descriptions will remain at their current length, well below 255 characters.

Release Notes: This release contains two content files: a LOINC Term to SNOMED CT Expression Reference Set and a LOINC Part to SNOMED CT Reference Set. The Beta content is release under the 715515008 | LOINC - SNOMED CT Cooperation Project module with concept identifiers from the 220170731 version of the International release of SNOMED CT and Version 2.58 of LOINC released December 2016.
Please Note: This release is distributed for evaluation purposes only and should not be used in production clinical systems or in the clinical setting.

This package contains the SNOMED CT International Edition concept model represented using RF2 reference sets. In addition to the four new MRCM refsets, the Beta release package also contains various files (Concept, Description, etc) containing supporting content from the prospective July 2017 SNOMED CT International Edition. These are provided in order to aid the consumption and analysis of the MRCM refsets, and should not be used for any other purpose.
Please Note: This supporting content is provisional, and can not be considered final until July 31st 2017. It should therefore not be used in any Production systems and should be used only in test systems to aid the evaluation of the MRCM refsets.
Permanent Packages were previously included in the SNOMED CT International Edition Release Format 1 (RF1) distribution. Because the files do not change from one release to the next, as of January 2015, the files have been made permanently available to IHTSDO Member National Release Centers and Affiliate Licensees via Internet download. They are no longer included in the International Edition.
Older versions of SNOMED CT International and US Edition release sources are still made available for research or historical purposes. To obtain deprecated or older versions of SNOMED CT releases, please visit NLM SNOMED CT Archives page:
