3000 BC: West Coast settlements rely on shellfish and acorns as staples
People occupy large settlements most of the year in an area now known as Santa Barbara, California. They hunt rabbits and deer on land, and waterfowl, seals, and sea lions in the Pacific Ocean. At the Encinitas archaeological sites, milling stones suggest that the inhabitants crushed hard seeds and acorns. Shells reveal that they relied on more than 20 kinds of shellfish as staples.
