1799: Haudenosaunee prophet calls for peace

The Seneca prophet Handsome Lake (b. ca. 1733–d. 1815) has his first religious revelation. He preaches that the Haudenosaunee Confederacy should live in peace with whites but maintain their Native culture and their positive beliefs in family, foods, and religion. The Haudenosaunee Longhouse religion attracts many followers.
