1942: Japan attacks Alaska; occupies some Aleutian Islands

The Japanese bomb Dutch Harbor Naval Air Station and Fort Mears in the eastern Aleutians and occupy Attu and Kiska Islands in the western Aleutians. The hospital at Unalaska is destroyed in an attack.
