1948: Arctic Health Research Center established
At the recommendation of the American Medical Association, Congress establishes the U.S. Public Health Service Arctic Health Research Center in Anchorage. The center will survey Native peoples in Alaska’s Arctic areas to determine their needs.

The Arctic Health Research Center co-sponsors a village sanitation aide training course, along with the Alaska Native Health Service and the Alaska Department of Health Services. One week of the course is spent in laboratory work studying disease transmission.
