1950: Public Health Service included in ‘doctor draft’
To meet dire shortages of medical staff on reservations, the Bureau of Indian Affairs medical director and Public Health Service officer, Fred Foard, makes the case for including the Indian health services in the Selective Service System’s “doctor draft.” Many health professionals choose to fulfill the draft obligations on reservations rather than in the emerging military conflict in Korea.
