1983: U.S. denies responsibility for overthrow of Hawaiian monarchy
The U.S. government, under pressure from Native Hawaiian activists, denies responsibility for the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. The Native Hawaiians Study Commission Report to the U.S. Congress concludes there was no federal responsibility for the end of the Hawaiian monarchy, and instead blames businessmen who sought annexation of the islands.
