2000: Damages awarded to Iñupiat victims of U.S. radiation studies
Congress appropriates $7 million for 102 Iñupiat who were given radioactive iodine in a medical experiment on thyroid function by the U.S. Air Force. The experiment, conducted from 1955 to 1957, involved 102 Iñupiat and 19 military personnel. Iñupiat say the study was not used to help participants or society in general, and that the results were kept secret by the military.
