1923: Pioneering Apsáalooke (Crow) nurse graduates
Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail graduates from the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing and returns to the Crow Agency, where she goes to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs Hospital. She is one in a generation of American Indian women who graduate from nursing school and become leaders in fighting for the rights of American Indians.
Eventually Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail takes a position with the Indian Health Service to promote the health of American Indians across the U.S. Later, employed by the U.S. Public Health Service, she travels to reservations assessing health, social, and educational problems.
