1831: Ka‘ahumanu orders Catholic missionaries out of Hawai‘i
Queen Ka‘ahumanu forces Catholic missionaries to leave or be imprisoned. Ka‘ahumanu, who has fought against the kapu tradition in Hawai‘i and accepted the Protestant Congregationalist missionaries in Honolulu a few years earlier, sees Catholicism as a form of idol worship. But Catholic influence continues to grow among Native Hawaiians who see a bridge between their beliefs and the Catholic ceremonies.
