2003: Dr. Noa Emmett Aluli appointed to Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission

Hawai‘i’s legislature appoints Dr. Noa Emmett Aluli to the Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission. The commission is established to manage Kaho‘olawe Island after a lawsuit by Protect Kaho‘olawe ‘Ohana is filed in U.S. Federal Court to stop ongoing U.S. Navy bombing tests that had begun in World War II.

Dr. Aluli, who is Native Hawaiian, founded Protect Kaho‘olawe ‘Ohana, and has been an advocate for Native Hawaiian health care needs. He considers his environmental activism to be intimately linked to the restoration of Native Hawaiian culture and health.
