National Library of Medicine Establishes New Division of Intramural Research

October 09, 2024

The National Library of Medicine (NLM)’s Intramural Research Program (IRP) has been officially renamed and reorganized as the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) led by NLM Scientific Director Richard Scheuermann, PhD. This milestone reflects NLM’s ongoing activities based on recommendations from a Blue Ribbon Panel Review of the intramural research program, aligns with NLM’s strategic direction, and represents a positive investment in growing a center of excellence for innovation in computational biology and health informatics research.

The new division is comprised of the Computational Health Research Branch (formerly under the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications) and the Computational Biology Branch (formerly under the National Center for Biotechnology Information).

In the new DIR, investigators will continue to engage in and expand a vibrant, diverse, collaborative community to advance biomedical knowledge and improve human health. DIR investigators will focus on opportunities to expand the computational biology and health informatics research portfolio at NLM, encourage a collective approach to basic computational and clinical informatics research, and nurture a diverse new generation of computational researchers through NLM’s intramural training programs.
