Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- The Office of Strategic Initiatives: 1) raises awareness of the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to improve the quality of science and 2) contributes directly to advancing DEI in data science and open science. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Organizing, sponsoring, or hosting trans-NIH talks and meetings on DEI-relevant topics
- Assuring DEI in the composition of trans-NIH lectures, workshops, and symposia
- Advancing DEI in recognition of scientists through leading and participating in Wikipedia edit-a-thons adding and enhancing pages for members of underrepresented communities and linking them to their contributions in biomedical research
- Contributing to and leading development and improvement of health data standards and other resources needed to understand and measure social determinants of health (SDOH) as they relate to DEI in health research and health care
- Participating in trans-NIH groups working to advance DEI in NIH conducted and funded research
- Formal reporting to NIH, HHS, Congress, White House, and others, of NLM programmatic activities and accomplishments advancing DEI in biomedical science and scholarship
