Data Changes

Qualitative Distinction
Qualitative Distinction modifiers allow flexibility in the RxNorm model to create new RXCUIs as needed. See the RxNorm Technical Documentation for more information about Qualitative Distinctions (QDs), which were first released in the August 2016 monthly release.

Here are the new concepts with QDs in the May 2019 release:

For each SCD or SBD with a QD, there is an associated attribute in RXNSAT with the attribute name (ATN) of 'RXN_QUALITATIVE_DISTINCTION'. The May release contains the following new attribute value (ATV) to match the QD strings found in the SCD and SBD normalized names:

NOTE: Multi-Ingredient Biologic Products and Naming in RxNorm
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is aware that the biological product with multiple ingredients, Herceptin Hylecta, is currently misrepresented in RxNorm. The suffix is currently placed on one of the ingredients. However, after discussions with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), NLM learned that the FDA’s intent is that the suffix is placed on the combination of ingredients.

The RxNorm team is collaborating with drug compendia, the National Council on Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP), and the FDA to determine the best way to represent this information in electronic systems. Once a model is identified, NLM will work to modify the RxNorm data to represent this in a consistent manner with other drug information sources.
