Before all we have put a cover page containing the reference about VHD-MMS, its promoters and its sponsors, followed by some useful addresses. Two pages for best use of the CD (foreword and getting started) are then included. Foreword contains an overview about the scope of the CD. How the CD is done and which kind of technical requirements are needed to properly navigate inside it, is the content of the other link: Getting started.
The entire content are then divided in five chapters.
First one is "FOR NEWCOMERS", i.e. for who don't know anything about the Visible Human Dataset and the services offered by its mirror sites in Milano. This one contains the tutorial made up from VHD-MMS explaining the aim of VHD constitution, the technic used to acquire and store the data, and the definitive format of the images, both radiological or fullcolor ones.
Second chapter has been thought "FOR NAVIGATORS", i.e. for who want to explore what is possible doing with these data. It contains a complete copy of the "VISIBLE HUMAN DATASET - MILANO MIRROR SITE®" (VHD-MMS) web site and related pages, such as the project gallery stored on National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project web site. The chapter also contains an image of the National Library of Medicine web site when the link with local full functionality, other than first step, are only those related to the Visible Human Project. With this section users should be able to understand what is the data and which kind of application one can built using them, also seeing some little examples.
Third one is "FOR BEGINNERS". It contain all the related utilities needed for viewing the images, i.e. freeware or public domain graphics visualization kits, or uncompress ones. Because questions are recursive, we have put here a series of answer to the most frequent questions (FAQ), i.e. which parameters give to the visualization kit to better view a single kind of images, or how one can amministrative do to having full access to the dataset, both male and female. Then a copy of the free license agreement form are included in three different format (HTML, text and MS Word 6.0), with detailed explanation about how use them to get the userid/password needed to have access to the data.
Next is named "FOR USERS". This is the most large chapter inside CD-ROM's Table of Contents. When a user know what is VHD and what need using it, is came the moment to explore the scientific and commercial works already done. For these reasons this chapter starts with a trip inside the NLM Visible Human Project Gallery. All the six sections in which it is divided on the NLM web site are putting here as is, with a lot of material stored directly on the CD-ROM to facilitate the exploration, and when this was not possible Internet link are maintaned to permit to perform an on-line navigation. Second paragraph contains a copy of all the proceedings showed at the First International VHP Conference, held in Bethesda in October, 1996. The entire CD-ROM published by NLM with these ones are duplicated here. At this point some images from the VHD are inserted in their original format, to give users the possibility to see immediately various examples of all kind of data stored in the dataset. Also the entire agenda of the Second International VHP Conference, held in Bethesda in October, 1998, is putted in relevance. Because we know that people like, after all, to view images, and also that the format in which they are stored are not so kindly for common ones, we have decided to put on the CD some examples in the original format, with a step by step document explaining how to retrieve, uncompress and visualize them.
Next we have introduced various "MEDICAL SPECIALITIES SECTIONS", with the aim to give all kind of researchers an overview, non-exaustive sure, on what has already be done. To realize this goal we have open the possibility to put their own work, or some demos of it if commercial one, to all the researcher/firm present with a product on the VHP gallery home page on NLM web site. An explicit agreement for inclusion is needed for intellettual and commercial copyright. Divide the works already done for medical specialities is not quite simple. Every one could cover a lot of them. We only want to point out the attention to the role played by these applications in every kind of medical day by day life. The specialities we have pointed out is five: Anatomy, Gastroenterology, Orthopaedia, Radiology and Cardiovascular Applications. Each section contains locally on the CD, when technically possible, some rappresentative effort in each field, kindly provided to us by the authors. Totally we have put on the CD seven different applications.
Last chapter is "FOR DEVELOPERS". Under this title we have joined together all that people, researchers or commercial ones, those need technical tools to implement more easily their own ideas about the use of the Visible Human Datasets. Only two are the demo sent to us for inclusion in the right time, but we think this is a chapter should be increased more and more in future releases of the CD-ROM.
