Introduction
A key objective of the 3DSystems project was the
development of import and export data structures which supports the conversion
of the raw file dataset (Figure 1) to a structured database.
This paper addresses the export image structures (Figure 2)
and its file format. Initially the design approach sought to use existing
file formats where such formats could be modified to accommodate the image
data (Figure 3). The DICOM format was of particular interest because it was found
to contain guidelines and structures for developing a suitable file format.
However, we later decided to delay seeking the required approval for a
modified file format until after the 3DSystems data structures, were developed
and tested.
The resulting product of the data structure design effort was the development
of a VHI file format to package bitmaps, coordinate tables, and anatomical
data. This format consists of an encoded machine-readable filename, a fixed
size header, one or more fixed size information pointers and variable size
information object blocks. Using the VHIF file format, four image
types (Figure 4) were defined.
