Design Principals
Rather than relying on the standard GUI, Flashback Imaging
designs a much simpler interface that usually maps the mouse motion and
its X/Y position to the hard disk space instead of the screen space. By
directly locating an image file or a portion of an image file using mouse's
position, it shortcuts the interface between you and the imagery data or
information. With such a direct mapping between a storage device and a
locating device, the user will feel like there is no boundary at all between
him and the data. All he knows is that by moving the mouse (or joystick),
new images from a sequence will come up quickly to the screen or he will
find himself roaming and panning around a very large image.
The simplicity in the interface allows the user to view a huge amount
of images in a very short time frame. It also allows the user with no knowledge
about computer to effectively navigate thousands of images. Therefore,
the same software can serve both experts and novices. A medical doctor
in his office can quickly search for certain images in just a few seconds,
saving valuable time; while a child without reading or computer skill can
browse ten of thousands of images in a few minutes while visiting a science
center, and in the process be immersed in a huge amount of information.
