Segmenting the Visible Human Project Data Sets
With some simple modification to the interface, the
Visible Human Explorer can be modified to support the process of segmentation
and labeling the Visible Human Project and similar data sets. A custom
version of the software has been provided to the Center for Human Simulation
at the University of Colorado Health Science Center where the original
axial slicing was done. This version will be used in quality control of
segmentation and development of full voxel-based anatomical databases.
The software is also being used to facilitate the alignment of the raw
axial images, one to the next, for the latest project, the slicing of a
human brain at 1/8 of mm (125 microns) per slice (Figure 1).
Gross anatomical structures can be labeled by medical students. At
the fine detail level, a skilled and experienced anatomist must be involved.
Putting into their hands a straightforward, interactive system can greatly
speed up the task involved. For example, they can easily flip between images
on either side, view the relationship of the voxel in each of the three
orthogonal views, and link to the developing text database and so on to
follow a small structure down to its final voxel. The simple speed and
smoothness of the browsing assist in the detection of anomalies during
the segmentation.
A fuller implementation would link the PC to the more numerically powerful
workstation where the extensive number crunching of first order segmentation
is done semi-automatically but now interactively steered and quality controlled
by an operator supported by the image browser tools.
