Conclusions
The low MSE, the high PSNR, and the minimum visual distortion
achievable by AFLC-VQ ([14][15][17][18])
by vector quantization of wavelet decomposed sub images ([5][12])
at high compression ratios have been demonstrated. The current design does
not include an entropy coding stage. Inclusion of an entropy coding stage
will improve the compression capability even more with no further increase
in distortion. Wavelet-based compression by scalar quantization [EZW-type]
of radiographic images has been accepted recently even by some radiologists
([8]). The unique results
reported here show the capability of this new vector quantization technique
to archive and transmit high quality digital color images such as the Visible
Human photographic images in a progressive, fast, interactive manner similar
to JPEG ([21]) progressive
transmission using the Internet at any desirable quality.
