Senator Rockefeller Hosts NLM Board and Guests

On September 28th, NLM's Board of Regents was treated to a night of delicious refreshments, good conversation, and even a demonstration of one of the latest applications of telemedicine.

At a reception hosted by Senator John D. Rockefeller, IV (D-WV), the NLM Board, staff and other guests enjoyed a demonstration in the Hart Senate Office Building of the new "Smart Card," an identification device that caches large amounts of information about patients.

The Smart Card has been developed by West Virginia University's Concurrent Engineering Research Center (CERC). The card is considered a model for similar telemedicine ventures, because it is carefully engineered to ensure security of patient records. Only a licensed physician, with a special information code, can gain access to the information on a Smart Card.

A highlight of the evening came when NLM Director Dr. Donald A.B. Lindberg, a physician by training, was presented with his own Smart Card. In turn, Dr. Lindberg presented Senator Rockefeller with a Smart Card of his own.
