Conclusions
The Visible Human Female data set has been successfully
used for the detailed definition of an abdominal anatomical model to be
applied in a gynecological laparoscopic surgery simulator. A three-dimensional
rendering of the resulting complete abdominal model is shown on
Figure 12. In
Movie 1,
Movie 2, and
Movie
3 are shown walk through the 3D models. The excellent visual fidelity
and spatial resolution of the color cryosections allowed the definition
of anatomy in the required quality, which no other data source was able
to fulfill. Limitations arise primarily from the post mortem anatomical
changes which can only be postulated and are hard to prove in the individual
case.
Even though we have been able to build a suitable geometric model for
laparoscopic surgery simulation, one must not forget that the usage of
the Visible Human Female for model generation represents only a first milestone
in the ongoing research towards the fast and efficient generation of a
patient specific digital anatomical representation.
