RxNav is the browser for RxNorm, the NLM standard terminology for drugs we discussed earlier. RxNav and application programming interfaces (APIs) support the adoption and distribution of RxNorm. This extends the scope of RxNorm by linking RxNorm drugs to physician-friendly terms (RxTerms), and drug classes (RxClass). RxNav uses the DailyMed API to link drug labeling data to RxNorm data.
RxNav finds drugs in RxNorm from the names and codes in its constituent vocabularies. RxNav displays links from clinical drugs, both branded and generic, to their active ingredients, drug components and related brand names. RxNav also provides lists of NDC codes and links to package inserts in DailyMed. The RxTerms record for a given drug can be accessed through RxNav, as well as clinical information from MED-RT, including pharmacologic classes, mechanisms of action and physiologic effects.
This is an example of the RxNav browser when searching for the RxNorm term acetaminophen 500 MG Oral Tablet. Looking at the screenshot, you can see the various components linked to this RxNorm term, including its ingredient, clinical dose forms, and associated generic and branded drugs.
