- Examine the subject–rich portions of the item being cataloged to identify key words and concepts
Monographic Material
- For textual material, examine the title page, preface, tables of contents, and other introductory material to determine the major topics covered in the item
- For other formats, watch or listen to the introductory material and consult any summaries provided to get enough information to determine the major topics covered in the item
Continuing Resources (Serials and Integrating Resources)
- For continuing resources, recognize that you are generally only seeing a small portion of the overall work. Subject terms to represent the entire run of a serial are likely to be broader and more general than terms that would apply to specific articles in the journal
