A Consultation of Doctors on the case of Sr. Toby Bumper!!, George Moutard Woodward, London, February 26, 1807
As a rule, physicians were not generally respected in the early 19th century. In this etching from the period, George Moutard Woodward (ca. 1760-1809), an English caricaturist and humor writer, highlights the perceived pretentiousness and pomposity of the medical profession as a group of four physicians sit together in convivial consultation, while the forsaken patient looks on from his bed.
