In his grand synthesis, Civilization and Disease, first presented in 1940 as the Messenger Lectures at Cornell University, medical historian and social visionary Henry Sigerist (1891-1957) begins with two chapters on the material and economic determinants of disease, in which he highlights, among other factors, the importance of the physical environment.
