O‘Malley earned his doctorate at Stanford University, where he worked as a professor and published more than 20 papers related to the life and work of Andreas Vesalius, the founder of modern anatomy. In 1959, he became a professor of medical history at the University of California at Los Angeles Department of Anatomy and years later, headed the then recently established Department of Medical History.
