Curriculathon Information

What is a curriculathon?

A curriculathon is a collaborative event for educators in the style of an NCBI-style codeathon. Over a week, participants work in teams with fellow science educators and NCBI experts to develop engaging, data-driven, active-learning exercises. Using NCBI resources, as appropriate, these activities will be designed to help students learn challenging scientific concepts and prepare them for real-world scientific research

What are the goals for this event?

  • Work with a team to develop a complete curricular package, including learning objectives, course materials, and assessments.
  • Gain valuable insight into the process of building effective and engaging science curricula.
  • Connect with fellow science educators from across the country, share ideas, and build a network of support.

What happens during this event?

  • Interactive Training Workshops and a SciEd Panel (in the mornings): Gain hands-on experience with NCBI resources and explore novel, data-centered learning activities.
  • Curriculathon (in the afternoons and all friday): Work in a team to develop your curriculum package, leveraging the expertise of your fellow educators and NCBI staff.
  • Standup Meetings (periodically throughout the week): Provide quick updates on the team project to keep your team on track and communicate about your efforts with other teams for feedback.
  • Final Presentation (at the end of the event): Present the team project's completed curriculum package to fellow participants and NIH staff.

What About After?

The BioEd Summit Curriculathon aims to foster long-term collaboration. We encourage you to continue working with your team, implement the lessons at your home institutions, and present your work at a conference or in a relevant publication.
